Long time ago, a group of Catholic Chinese in Melbourne who, appreciating the importance of promoting faith with their own culture, started a small community and celebrated Mass in their mother tongue once a year around Christmas time.
As the group grew bigger, they gathered more frequently and established organizational structures. In 1985 the community was registered as Our Lady of China Centre. It was also felt that a Cantonese speaking chaplain was needed to look after the community.
Through many prayers and hard work, Rev. Peter Tsang, a Salesian priest, agreed to come from Hong Kong in 1992. Under his guidance the community flourished even further. With the large number of community members, Sunday Masses had to be celebrated in a school hall for several years. Then in April 2001, with the approval of Archbishop George Pell, the Archdiocese of Melbourne kindly granted us use of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church, Wattle Park, sharing all facilities with the local Parish. This church has become our permanent Mass centre and the Community's office.
Sadly, Fr. Peter went to his eternal rest in December 2010. With the blessing from our Heavenly Father, we managed to recruit two full-time chaplains: Fr. Francis Li Xiaoguo for the Mandarin-speaking parishioners and Fr. Aloysius Nato for the Cantonese-speakers. With the guidance of our two chaplains, we are confident that the pastoral care for the Chinese Catholics in Melbourne will reach a new height.
